HD Voice for iOS FAQs

HD Voice delivers clearer, natural-sounding audio when both parties are using HD Voice-enabled phones connected to our 4G LTE network.

HD Voice service is included in your existing voice plan at no additional charge. When you purchase an iPhone 6 or newer, HD Voice is automatically added to your account and ready for you to use on your device. HD Voice calls are billed as standard voice minutes, according to your plan.

HD Voice also provides:

• Simultaneous voice and 4G LTE data
• 6-way audio conference calls
• Wi-Fi Calling

Note: Not all Apple devices are HD Voice-compatible.

HD Voice enables simultaneous voice and 4G LTE data capability for iPhone 6 and newer devices. With HD Voice, when you're connected to the Verizon 4G LTE network, you can surf the web, continue a download, use an app, or use a feature like Mobile Hotspot while talking on a call, regardless of whether the person you're calling has HD Voice or not.

If you're not connected to the Verizon 4G LTE network, you can talk and simultaneously browse the web or run other data applications when connected to a Wi-Fi network.

Wi-Fi Calling allows you to make and receive calls over a Wi-Fi network if cellular isn't available.

If you have iOS 10.3 or newer, you can use FaceTime® to receive calls on iCloud connected devices using your iPhone mobile number, even if it's in a different location or turned off.

• To use iOS Support of Single Phone Number for Multiple Devices, you need:
  
  • iPhone 6 or newer on the Verizon network
  • One of the following devices:
    
    • iPad mini 2 and newer
    • iPod Touch 6th Generation
    • Apple Watch Series 2 running OS 3.2 or newer
    • Mac 2012 or newer Macs running OS X Yosemite or newer.
  • All devices must be connected to the same iCloud account.
• To enable iOS Support of Single Phone Number for Multiple Devices on your iPhone:
  
  • Tap Settings.
  • Tap Phone.
  • Tap Calls on Other Devices.
  • Slide or tap Allow Calls on Other Devices.

To be eligible for HD Voice, you need to have an HD Voice-capable phone.

iPhone 6 and newer models all support HD Voice. (Older model iPhones will NOT receive a software update to support HD Voice.)

Note: If you have any features that are incompatible with HD Voice, you'll need to remove them when you add the HD Voice feature to your account.

HD Voice service is available at no additional charge.

• HD Voice is included in existing plans.
  
  
• HD Voice calls are billed as standard voice calls according to your plan. No data charges apply.
  
  
• Mobile-to-Mobile calls that happen to be HD Voice calls are charged just like traditional Mobile-to-Mobile calls and are billed against your monthly minute allowance according to your plan.

When you purchase an iPhone 6 or newer, HD Voice will be automatically added to your account as long as you're eligible. To be eligible for HD Voice, you need to meet all of the following requirements:

• Be on a standard monthly plan, like the new Verizon Plan
  
• Have an HD Voice-capable phone (iPhone 6 or newer)
  

If you're eligible, you just need to turn HD Voice on.

To turn on HD Voice:

1. Tap Settings.
2. Tap Cellular.
   
3. Tap Cellular Data Options.
4. Tap Enable LTE.
5. Tap Voice & Data so it has a check next to it.
   

You've successfully enabled HD Voice on your iPhone.

Note: If Call Forwarding was set up on your line before adding HD Voice, you'll need to reset your Call Forwarding number after restarting your phone.

HD Voice is built on a new technology platform that is different from the platform upon which certain existing features are built. Until these features are upgraded to work on the new platform, they won't work on HD Voice-enabled phones.

When adding the HD Voice feature, you'll be notified of any incompatible features that exist on your line. These features will be removed from your line at the time HD Voice is added.

Note: Apps associated with these features also aren't compatible with HD Voice at this time. These apps on your phone won't work as expected as long as HD Voice remains on your line.

Business customers: Please contact your company's Wireless Program Administrator to remove incompatible features and add HD Voice.

To verify HD Voice is ready to use on an iPhone:

1. Tap Settings
2. Tap Cellular
3. Tap or slide the Cellular Data switch to on (switch will be green)
4. Tap Cellular Data Options
5. Tap Enable LTE

If Voice & Data has a check next to it, HD Voice is enabled and ready for use.

To enable HD Voice on your compatible iPhone:

1. Tap Settings
2. Tap Cellular
3. Tap or slide the Cellular Data switch to on (switch will be green)
4. Tap Cellular Data Options
5. Tap Enable LTE
6. Tap Voice & Data

If Voice & Data has a check next to it, HD Voice is enabled and ready for use.

You've successfully enabled HD Voice to your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus.

To disable HD Voice on your compatible iPhone, simply switch the Voice & Data selection to Data Only.

No, your calling areas won't be restricted because of an upgrade to HD Voice. You can make or receive HD Voice calls as long as you're connected to our 4G LTE network. Even when you're out of our 4G LTE coverage area, you can still make or receive voice calls in the US.

While traveling abroad, you can still make or receive voice calls on our roaming partners' CDMA or GSM networks.

No, calls won't switch between 3G and 4G LTE networks. If your call starts on the 3G network and you move to a 4G LTE coverage area, your call will continue as a 3G/CDMA call. However, if your call starts on the 4G LTE network and you move to a non-4G LTE coverage area, your call will drop.

You can make an HD Voice call the same way you make a regular voice call (e.g., from your Contacts app, Phone app or the Recent Calls list), provided that both you and the person you're calling:

• Are using an HD Voice-capable phone
• Have the HD Voice feature enabled
• Are connected to the Verizon 4G LTE network

If a wired headset or a Bluetooth® headset is connected to your phone, HD Voice calls may not be delivered to the headset with HD quality unless the headset is also compatible with HD Voice.

You can set up a 6-way conference call the same way you would set up a 3-way call. The only difference is that if your HD Voice-enabled phone is connected to Verizon's 4G LTE network, you can set up a conference call with up to 5 people, even if they don't have HD Voice-enabled phones.

To set up a conference call with up to 6 phones:

1. Call the first phone number as usual.
   
   
2. While on that call, tap Add call to call the second phone number.
   
   Note: When the second call is established, the first call will be automatically put on hold. You can swap between the two calls.
   
   
3. Tap Merge to join the two calls and form a 3-way conference call.
   
   
4. You can call up to 3 more phones to form a 6-way conference call.

You've successfully set up a 6-way conference call.

If you're not able to make or receive an HD Voice call, it may be due to one of the following reasons:

• HD Voice isn't activated on your line or the line you're calling
  
  
• Enable LTE is set to Data Only on your phone or on the phone you're calling
  
  
• Either you or the person you're calling isn't using an HD Voice-capable phone at the time of the call
  
  
• Either your phone or the phone you're calling isn't connected to the Verizon 4G LTE network at the time of the call

There are several reasons why you may have received this error message. Please refer to our HD Voice - Feature Activation Troubleshooting page for more information.

On iPhone 6 or newer devices, it can take a few minutes for the system to update your account with the HD Voice feature. When HD Voice is successfully added, the Enable LTE setting will be set to Voice & Data.

If the Enable LTE setting remains at Data Only after 6 minutes, it's likely that your line isn't eligible to activate HD Voice from the setting because it belongs to a business account or has an incompatible feature.

If your line doesn't fall into the above categories, but Enable LTE remains at Data Only, please contact Verizon Wireless Customer Service by calling 6-1-1.

On iPhone 6 and 6s devices, the default device setting for Enable LTE prior to March 2016 was Data Only.

Change the setting to Voice & Data in order to experience HD Voice and Simultaneous Voice and LTE Data.

For all iPhone 6 and newer devices delivered after March, 2016, the default device setting for Enable LTE is Voice & Data.
